Shared ownership and critical illness insurance

Critical illness insurance policies are often purchased under a shared ownership structure which may also be referred to as a split-dollar arrangement. Such shared ownership structures may take many different forms as the needs and objectives of the parties involved will determine not only the policy that will be considered by the clients but the structure of the shared ownership. 

• Which party will be the beneficiary of the critical illness benefits? 
• Who will be entitled to the return of premium benefits? 
• Or will all parties be beneficiaries of a percentage of all forms of benefits? 

Establishing a shared ownership structure will require some work from advisors to provide guidance in the beneficiary and payer structure of the shared ownership. Attendees will learn about important tax issues concerning the allocation of premiums and benefits of critical illness insurance policies when a shared ownership of benefits is being contemplated. Case studies will help with understanding and application of this strategy.
